[September 14, 2023] Kakao has published a report detailing its efforts to provide stable and reliable IT services.

On September 14, Kakao (CEO Hong Eun-Taek) released the 'Kakao Reliability Report,' a comprehensive document outlining the company’s strategies and action plans to enhance Reliability.

Now available on Kakao’s corporate site, the report covers a range of topics, including ▲Kakao's monitoring systems, ▲systematic incident responses, ▲disaster simulation exercises, ▲data protection initiatives, ▲redundancy systems, ▲Business Continuity Plan (BCP), and updates on new data centers. The report also highlights efforts by key Kakao affiliates, like KakaoPay, Kakao Entertainment, Kakao Mobility, and Kakao Bank, to implement information protection management systems and redundancy systems for stable service operations.

Kakao has developed monitoring systems to conduct real-time checks and minimize the spread of any incidents. The company utilizes a real-time service dashboard (monitoring tool) for comprehensive monitoring, continuously improving KakaoTalk and ensuring service stability. Regular and irregular training sessions simulating various scenarios are conducted for systematic incident response.

The company has notably increased its investment in Reliability. The 2023 budget for information protection exceeded 20.9 billion won, marking a 48.8% increase from the previous year, while the number of specialized information protection staff rose by 68.9%, from 61 to 103 employees.

The company has also garnered recognition for its security proficiency, securing various technical certifications such as ISO 27001 (international standard for information security management systems), ISO 27701 (international standard for personal information management systems), ISO 27017 (cloud service certification), and ISMS-P (Korean certification for information security and personal information protection management systems).

The report further details Kakao's technical preparations for potential data center disruptions. By diversifying cloud services, operational tools, and data centers, Kakao ensures rapid recovery in case of malfunctions.

Building upon these advancements, Kakao is set to inaugurate its first proprietary data center, ‘Kakao Data Center Ansan,’ in the first quarter of 2024. This hyperscale data center, capable of handling over 100,000 servers, will have the capacity to operate up to 120,000 servers and store up to 6 exabytes (EB) of data. The center is designed for 24/7 uninterrupted operation, equipped with redundant power, cooling, and communication systems and comprehensive disaster preparedness facilities. It also includes comprehensive disaster and hazard facilities to handle fires, flooding, tsunamis, strong winds, and earthquakes. (End)
