- Receives certification from the Ministry of Science and ICT, enabling issuance of legally valid electronic documents.

[October 20, 2023] Kakao (CEO Hong Eun-Taek) has announced its acquisition of the official Electronic Document Intermediary certification from the Ministry of Science and ICT.

 

This certification, under the Electronic Documents and Electronic Transactions Act, is awarded by the Minister of Science and ICT to entities that ensure safety and reliability in the distribution of electronic documents. Electronic documents circulated through a certified intermediary hold the same legal effect as traditional paper documents received through registered mail.

 

With this certification, Kakao aims to launch 'KakaoTalk Electronic Documents' within its KakaoTalk Wallet service, possibly within this year. This feature allows for the convenient sending, receiving, viewing, and storing of essential documents such as bills and notifications from public and private institutions.

 

The KakaoTalk Electronic Documents service, anticipated to enhance user convenience, will leverage the 'Kakao Certificate,' currently used by over 30 million users, for easy access to electronic documents. The service is also expected to contribute to environmental conservation by reducing paper usage, thus aiding in tree protection and decreasing fine dust and carbon emissions.

 

Yang Joo-Il, Head of the KakaoTalk Division at Kakao, stated, “Obtaining the Electronic Document Intermediary certification will contribute to invigorating the domestic electronic document industry. We plan to continually expand our services to enable users to easily manage various digital assets, including certificates and electronic documents, beyond everyday conversations.”

 

The KakaoTalk Wallet, launched on December 16, 2020, offers a secure space within KakaoTalk for storing and managing various digital assets for identification and verification purposes. Users can currently access features like the ▲'Kakao Certificate,' ▲electronic certificates, ▲student IDs, and ▲entry QR codes within the Wallet. (End)
