[March 14, 2024] Kakao announced that the company acquired “Leadership A,” the highest rating in the 2023 CDP Climate Change report announced by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international environment organization. Earlier on the 13th, Kakao also won the “Carbon Management Sector Honors” at the Climate Change Response and Water Management Excellence Awards, hosted by the CDP Korea Committee.

Led by financial investment institutions worldwide, CDP is a global initiative that requests major corporations across the globe to disclose information on business management related to climate change and environmental impact, publishing annual reports based on the gathered data. CDP’s information is utilized as environmental data sources by key ESG evaluation institutes, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indice (DJSI) and Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI).

The 2023 CDP Climate Change report evaluated more than 23,000 companies worldwide, with 347 companies receiving the Leadership A rating. 10 Korean companies made the list, including Kakao.

In addition, the CDP Korea Committee held the Climate Change Response and Water Management Excellence Awards Ceremony on the 13th and awarded four corporations, including Kakao, with the highest rating in the Carbon Management Sector Honors (Communication).

Last year, Kakao became a member of the global initiative RE100 to achieve carbon neutrality and disclosed the “Kakao Carbon Index,” a self-developed user environment contribution index, on the company website to encourage consumers to participate in various eco-friendly activities. The company also purchased Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to power its Pangyo and Jeju offices using renewable energy.

Since establishing the Active Green Initiative in 2022, a principle for tackling the climate crisis, Kakao has undertaken various activities to solve environmental issues. This year, the company plans to continue these efforts in collaboration with its users.

Kakao CEO Hong Eun-taek commented, “This is the result of our ongoing efforts and meticulous consideration of practical activities in which users can participate to address climate change and achieve carbon neutrality.” He added, “This year, we will continue to push forward to fulfill Kakao’s role in creating a sustainable society.” (End)
