Kakao Adds ‘Toolbox’ Feature to PlayMCP, Accelerating the Expansion of the Agentic AI Ecosystem
- Allowing users to directly select and manage registered MCP tools, enabling immediate use in external services after account authentication
- Simplified integration through a single Kakao account, eliminating the need for individual tool authentication and delivering a more personalized AI experience
- Plans to connect MCP tools from a wide range of external partners, further expanding agentic AI experiences
[November 24, 2025] Kakao (CEO Shina Chung) announced that the company has introduced a new Toolbox feature to PlayMCP, its MCP-based open platform first unveiled in July.
PlayMCP is an open platform built on MCP, or Model Context Protocol, which enables various AI models to connect securely with external tools. Since its beta launch, the platform has attracted strong interest and positive feedback from developers and users alike. MCP is a standardized communication protocol that defines how AI models interact with external data and tools, enabling users to perform tasks tailored to their needs and purposes within a single service, without switching between multiple platforms. By launching PlayMCP, Kakao became the first company in Korea to establish a foundation for building and expanding an agentic AI ecosystem.
The newly introduced Toolbox is a core feature that allows users to personally select and manage a wide range of MCP tools registered on PlayMCP in one place. Once added to the Toolbox, these tools can be used immediately in external AI services such as ChatGPT and Claude with a single Kakao account authentication.
With the Toolbox, tool integration across AI services becomes significantly simpler. After completing account authentication, users can naturally request the MCP tools they selected through PlayMCP directly within their AI service of choice. For example, users can issue requests such as “Send what you just told me to my KakaoTalk ‘Chat with Myself,’” “Tell me today’s schedule,” “Show me the gifts I’ve received,” or “Play the songs I listened to on Melon on this day last year,” and have them executed seamlessly.
To get started, users simply visit the PlayMCP website, log in with their Kakao account, and freely add desired MCP tools to their Toolbox. In ChatGPT, users can enable Developer Mode, register a custom MCP server URL, and authenticate the Toolbox to begin using it. In Claude, the Toolbox can be connected by selecting Settings and linking it under Custom Connectors. In both services, all tools stored in the Toolbox become instantly available through a single Kakao account authentication.
A key strength of the Toolbox is that all registered MCP tools can be securely accessed without individual authentication for each tool. In addition, by integrating with users’ actual Kakao data, the feature enables a highly personalized AI experience.
Looking ahead, Kakao plans to expand the Toolbox beyond Kakao services to include MCP tools from a broad range of external partners. Through this effort, PlayMCP is set to evolve into a hub platform for AI ecosystems both in Korea and globally, offering an open and secure environment where developers and users alike can more easily extend and leverage AI capabilities.
Kakao AI Agent Platform Performance Lead Yong-ha Yoo stated, “The addition of the Toolbox to PlayMCP signifies AI’s evolution from a simple conversational partner into an ‘everyday AI’ that understands and acts within users’ real lives. We will continue to advance the platform so that developers and users can further expand their agentic AI experiences.” (E.O.D.)
