[June 5, 2026] Kakao is carrying out a range of initiatives in celebration of World Environment Day on June 5.

# Kakao Together Launches “Things Used Once and Thrown Away” Campaign

Kakao Together, the social impact platform operated by Kakao (CEO Shina Chung), is launching a user participation campaign titled “Things Used Once and Thrown Away” beginning at 10 AM on June 5.

The campaign was designed to highlight the value of resource circulation and environmentally responsible practices by upcycling discarded banners into disaster response supplies. Through the campaign, Kakao Together plans to work with volunteers to transform collected waste banners into approximately 16,000 sandbags for disaster and emergency response. The completed sandbags will be delivered to five to six areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall during this summer’s monsoon season.

Users can easily participate in the donation campaign, simply by clicking an animated Bokshimi button on the campaign page to express their support for resource circulation efforts. For each click, Kakao will donate ₩1,000 on the participant’s behalf, with participation limited to once per account.

To help users engage more naturally with the concept of resource circulation, Kakao Together is also releasing webtoon content featuring Kakao Friends characters “Bokshimi” and “Tube.”

# Kakao Employees and Families Participate in “Unjungcheon Biodiversity Guardians” Initiative

Kakao employees will also take part in hands-on environmental conservation activities within the local community. In celebration of World Environment Day, approximately 100 employees and family members will participate in the “Unjungcheon Biodiversity Guardians” campaign in the area surrounding Unjungcheon Stream near the company’s headquarters in Seongnam.

The initiative is being conducted as part of the “One Company–One Organization Public Interest Partnership Program” organized by the Gyeonggi Public Interest Activity Support Center. On June 4, Kakao held an official signing ceremony at Kakao Agit attended by Myeong-hwa Yoo, Director of the Gyeonggi Public Interest Activity Support Center; Seong-geun Kwak, President of the Seongnam Environmental Movement Association; and Shin Hong, Performance Leader for ESG Partnerships at Kakao.

Employees and family members who share the goals of the partnership will gather on the morning of June 6 to participate in a plogging activity along Unjungcheon Stream and study aquatic organisms to gain a deeper understanding of the river ecosystem. Participants will also remove invasive plant species that threaten the ecosystem and sow seed balls made from native riparian plant seeds to help restore habitats for indigenous vegetation.

Following this activity, Kakao plans to continue collaborating with the Seongnam Environmental Movement Association to establish otter shelters in the Unjungcheon Stream and Tancheon Stream areas and conduct ongoing monitoring efforts, contributing to ecosystem restoration and the development of a healthy river culture.

Shin Hong, Performance Leader for ESG Partnerships at Kakao, stated, “Through this initiative, we are simultaneously creating opportunities to discover new value in discarded resources together with users online while working alongside employees to protect local ecosystems offline,” adding, “We will continue our efforts to support environmental protection and build a more sustainable society.” (E.O.D.)
