Daum Planet Challenges Cyworld Dominance (Digital Chosun/Chsoun Ilbo)

While the top personal media service Cyworld is trying to extend its lead, the challenge posed by Planet of Daum Communications is rising fast. According to website researcher Metrix Corp., Daum Planet has jump started its first week (the last week of August) with a surprising 2.13 million visitors and a 3rd place among homepage services. 600,000 Planets were opened on the first day of service alone, and the hot streak continued in September as 2.2 million people visited the website during the first week of the month. A total of 3 million Planets are currently open.

Planet“s number of visitors isn“t yet comparable to of Cyworld“s 10~11 million. Daum, however, is looking at the output so far as a success, considering the fact that Cyworld started the service three years earlier than two-week-old Planet. Moreover, if you count the user base of Daum Cafe, which is arguably the largest and the most active group of internet users in Korea, Daum“s new service has quite a potential. An official of Daum showed the company“s confidence. "With powerful multimedia tools, Planet will be able to draw the attention of Internet users who are bored with Cyworld," he said.
