Daum enters DMB business in a cooperation with MBC, one of 6 Terrestrial DMB Service Licensees.
============================================================================
The Korean Broadcasting Commission selected 6 licensees for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service in Seoul and the metropolitan region.
The commission said on March 28 that it selected 6 licensees for terrestrial DMB service, including 3 consortiums led by terrestrial TV broadcasters, KBS, MBC and SBS, and 3 consortiums led by non-terrestrial TV broadcasting service providers, YTN DMB, KMMB, and Korea DMB. At the recommendation of the commission, these 6 licensees are expected to be approved by the Ministry of Information and Communication next month.
The 3 licensees for terrestrial DMB service such as KBS, MBC and SBS plan to launch commercial service on July 1 this year simultaneously, triggering competition with TU Media, a satellite DMB service firm, which is set to kick off its commercial service in May. Three other successful consortiums of non-terrestrial TV broadcasters are expected to start commercial service in the latter part of this year.
In appraisals made on the basis of 1,000 points, consortiums of MBC, SBS and KBS obtained 855.40, 846.20 and 830.42 points, respectively. Among consortiums led by non-terrestrial TV companies, YTN DMB, KMMB and Korea DMB earned 773.35, 709.36, and 702.49 points, respectively.
Among applicants, consortiums led by EBS, U-Cube Media, DMB Korea and Kukmin DMB Plus failed in license competition.
"The commission will seek ways of using broadcast content of failed broadcasters such as EBS and KBS 2TV. It will also decide policies for allowing retransmission of terrestrial TV broadcasting content by satellite DMB player in one or two weeks," said Lee Hyo-seong, Vice Chairman of the broadcasting commission.
According to a forecast made by the Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI), terrestrial DMB service providers will attract 400,000 subscribers this year, generating sales of 13.3 billion won (approximately 13.3 million dollars), production effects of 333.7 billion won and jobs for 2,021 workers.
Industry observers, however, point out several tasks to be addressed by licensees such as funds for marketing receivers, construction of networks for seamless broadcasting service, and development of content tailored for mobile service.
