February 7, 2006 - Daum Communications announced today that it sealed a contract with Infront Sports & Media AG, the official agency for hook-up rights of the FIFA World Cup Soccer Games 2006™ in Germany. The contract entitles Daum to relay the games over the Internet and mobile networks.
With the contract, Daum Communications has become the officially licensed broadcaster and mobile video provider of all the matches, allowing the communications company to relay matches over the Internet and mobile networks for the first time in Korea.
Specifically, Daum Communications secured the rights to connect to and edit nearly live video image clips provided by Infront Sports & Media AG for Internet and mobile services. Daum also has the rights to relay the soccer matches using pictures and text, and the rights to connect service subscribers with video highlights of the games provided by Infront Sports & Media AG 20 minutes after games are completed. In addition, it has secured the right to relay video highlights of matches from the 2002 FIFA World Cup Finals held in Korea and Japan. Finally, it obtained all rights to use official logos and emblems of the 2006 World Cup Games in Germany. The contract also includes the authority to resell the rights to the games to other internet sites and mobile communication carriers.
Daum Communications will set up a studio dedicated to relaying World Cup matches at the International Broadcasting Center (IBC), becoming the only portal service provider, except for terrestrial TV broadcasting firms, to do so. The company plans to produce video content organically, using the IBC in Germany, the main studio at its “Global Media Center“ on Jeju Island, and a multimedia center in Seoul. That setup, along with the plans to develop organic content and Daum“s “FIFA World Cup Game 2006 channel“, will provide domestic users with exciting coverage of the matches in Germany in real time.
Due to the time difference between Korea and Germany, most FIFA World Cup games are to be relayed in the early hours of the Korean morning. To compensate, Daum Communication plans to offer mobile images and video services of games in a variety of package formats, including game highlight packages, best scenes, best players, and highlights of matches categorized by group.
"It is significant that the World Cup soccer games, which had only been relayed via terrestrial TV broadcasts, will now be connected to by our users over the Internet and mobile communication networks," said Seok Jong Hoon, head Daum Communications“ media division. "We will maximize synergies by linking video content to a variety Daum Communication services and sharpening the competitive edge of our search functionality, and at the same time install new mobile image media platforms," he added.
