KakaoTalk in Leyte: From Relief to Recovery
[Manila, Philippines - March 13, 2014] KakaoTalk, leading mobile messaging application and mobile social platform, reached out to assist more than 134 families severely impacted by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the Leyte region, in the hopes of contributing to relief efforts and laying the foundation for future recovery support.
KakaoTalk recently matched user donations made through World Vision from November 27 to December 10, which amounted to over USD 10,000.
The KakaoTalk Philippines team flew to hard-hit areas in Ormoc, Leyte to distribute a week’s supply of food and hygiene kits, assist breastfeeding mothers and gauge additional needs of various Visayas communities. The health pack included basic necessities such as water, rice, canned goods, cooking oil, monggo beans, biscuit, brown sugar and salt.
“KakaoTalk has been one with the community since the immediate aftermath of the typhoon,” said Jean Lee, Managing Director of KakaoTalk Philippines. “Even though months have passed since the initial devastation of Yolanda, we wanted the affected families to understand that they were not forgotten. Our commitment to their recovery remains strong.” he added.
The aid effort benefited several groups in Macabug, Ormoc, including the Women and Young Children’s Space and Child Friendly Space.
