공유하기
-Advancing KakaoTalk and KakaoMini features by maximizing synergies among Kakao companies
-Expanding the global content business on the back of its proprietary digital content, including music, web comics/novels, games and films
-Securing the leadership in Asia’s blockchain technology by developing its own platform
At the press conference held at The Westin Chosun Seoul, co-CEOs of Kakao, Yeo Min-soo and Joh Su-yong, announced a new vision of Kakao, referred to as “Kakao 3.0,” under which Kakao will secure future growth momentum by maximizing synergies among its IT services and aggressively expanding overseas.
Joh said, “At Kakao 1.0, we were quick to join the burgeoning mobile computing industry by introducing KakaoTalk, while Kakao 2.0 was the period when we continuously expanded into a variety of IT services beyond the mobile messaging app.” Joh added, “Now at Kakao 3.0, we will continue to explore our growth potential by seamlessly integrating services among Kakao companies, and actively building presence in the global market.”
#Secure the growth momentum by seamlessly integrating services while strengthening the features of KakaoTalk and KakaoMini
One of the key strategies for Kakao 3.0 is to maximize synergies through an integration of Kakao services centering on KakaoTalk. Upon its introduction in March 2010, KakaoTalk, Korea’s top mobile messaging app, literally changed the way people communicate with their friends and family. Later, it transformed into an indispensable mobile lifestyle platform offering various digital services including games, shopping, mobile payment, mobile money transfer, and digital content. Recently, Kakao took one step further by launching KakaoMelon, a new feature which allows KakaoTalk users to share music with their friends while using the messaging app, and Open Chat, where anonymous users can join a chat room at the click of a link. Likewise, Kakao will continue to make efforts to introduce new ways of communication by combining KakaoTalk with other services. By the end of the year, Kakao plans to launch “Drawer Project,” a voice-activated AI search engine that enables users to manage and control all of the digital assets including photos, video clips and schedules they share via KakaoTalk.
KakaoMini, an artificial intelligence speaker launched in November last year, will be upgraded with new features of making calls, translating and controlling home IoT gadgets. Kakao will continue to develop its AI platform Kakao I and unveil its AI development platform Kakao I Open Builder in the second half of this year. Kakao will also introduce AI-backed services it made available in association with Hyundai Motor Group, GS E&C and POSCO E&C within this year.
#Foster cooperation and joint investment system among Kakao companies to raise the value of intellectual property(IP)-based digital content, and secure technological prowess in Asia’s blockchain industry
Kakao will enhance its IP-based content business including web comics, web novels, games and movies, and will make a foray into the international market with its proprietary digital content. To maximize the value of its IP content, Kakao will seek mutual growth with content providers and establish joint investment and cooperation system among Kakao companies. Kakao will expand the list of well-made IP content for multiple uses, such as comics based on novels and film based on comics. Armed with the quality digital content, Kakao will expand beyond its strategic market, Japan, into China and Southeast Asia. At the same time, Kakao plans to acquire promising content companies with $1 billion raised from the GDR offerings last year.
Kakao also announced its plan to develop its own blockchain technology platform within the year. Ground X, Kakao’s newly established subsidiary specializing in blockchain, will explore the technology with the goal of taking the technological leadership in Asia. To do so, Ground X will open its blockchain platform to the public, explore ways to leverage R&D and investment to ensure further growth, and offer new blockchain-based services combined with Kakao’s existing services. To boost blockchain developers’ community, Ground X will support events including training, hackathon and conferences. Jason Han, former CTO of FuturePlay, a local startup accelerator, is named CEO of Ground X.
Co-CEO Yeo Min-soo said, “Bearing in mind that the global IT paradigm is changing at a breakneck speed these days, we will work tirelessly to introduce services that meet the needs of our users by pioneering new technologies in the age of internet and mobility, as we have always been a trailblazer in this market. We have a firm belief that a series of innovations and services to be unveiled in Kakao 3.0 will surely bring more values to our service users.”
