Kakao Becomes the First in the Industry to Achieve the International Environmental Management System Standard

Seoul, South Korea, April 9, 2021 — Kakao has become the first in the industry to achieve ISO 14001, an international standard for environmental management systems, and with that, the company will embark on further strengthening its eco-friendly management.

On the 9th, Kakao held an ISO 14001 certification awarding ceremony at its Pangyo office located in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, with the attendance of three officials from the Korea Management Registrar (KMR) including CEO Eunju Hwang, along with four of its own members, including Vice President Yoojin Kim from Kakao's ESG Environment Task Force. According to KMR, Kakao is the first company among South Korea’s web portals and information-based Internet services to have acquired ISO 14001 certification.

ISO 14001 was established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to evaluate and certify whether companies regard environmental management as an important standard for their business management and that they also systematically manage and improve their environmental management activities.

Kakao regards eco-friendly management as an important standard for its work system and business operations. This has seen the company has obtain its ISO 14001 certification in recognition of its concrete goals for environmental improvement pursuant to the relevant laws and guidelines while systematically carrying out action plans.

Kakao is also currently concretizing various goals through its internal environmental Task Force so as to establish a sustainable environmental management system. Having achieved ISO 14001, the company is gearing up to achieve various other environment-related international standards, and as such, it is also building an eco-friendly data center, planned for completion in 2023, as a means to contribute to the transition to a low-carbon economy through eco-friendly business activities. In addition to this, the company also plans to organize an advisory group to cooperate with industries, academia, and institutions.

Kakao Vice President Yoojin Kim said, “Kakao has an active awareness of environmental issues. We not only participate in the realization of carbon neutrality, energy reuse and other endeavors, we also strive to establish our own sustainable environmental management system to help create a better world.”
