A Small Gift from Kakao Harbang
Today’s wish is from the Jeju Jeil Community Child Center, which operates a variety of programs for the community’s children through Kakao Harbang.
The Jeju Jeil Community Child Center was established in 2005 and provides support to 40 elementary school to high school-aged children and youth. The Jeju Jeil Community Child Center operates many activity programs in order to provide a warm home away from home for the community’s next generation.
The community center’s main goal is to boost children’s self-confidence and help develop social skills by offering educational and cultural programs that can lead to educational and cultural equality and heal any emotional scars children may get from home or school.

In 2017 and 2018, Kakao Harbang granted the community center children’s wish and offered climbing classes.
Climbing not only improves physical strength, but also builds the willingness to take on new challenges and helps them learn to trust and cooperate with others.
The children who learned to climb through Kakao Harbang’s climbing program participated in the Jeju Province Sports Competition and the climbing competition held by Jeju’s superintendent of education, and won the gold, silver and bronze prize for the K to 12 competitions.
The children’s joy is evident in the smiles of their faces as they stand on the podium.
In 2019, the children took part in craft classes that used Hanji, the traditional Korea paper, and learned how to dye fabrics with natural ingredients, which helped children learn about the traditions of Korea and Jeju.
The community center’s children learned about nature’s beauty as they created beautiful works of art with traditional paper and natural dyes.
The children filled the bowls they made with sweets and biscuits and gave them to the elders of the community.

The children donates their talents every month by holding flute and traditional Korean dance concerts at the local senior citizen’s center.
I still can’t forget the happiness the community’s elders expressed when they were given the gifts we prepared.
This intergenerational exchange, which created an immense amount of joy, was a good experience for both the children and the elders.
In 2020, the children are taking part in a program that creates artwork with succulent plants.
Trash the children collected while helping clean up the community and old wood that washed up on the beach are combined with succulent plants and upcycled to create succulent plant art.
The children are taking extremely good care of succulent plant art they created.
By taking care of their plant art, children experience emotional stability and become emotionally strong.
The plant art they are taking such good care of will be gifted to the elders at the local senior citizen’s centers at the end of this year and next year’s Family Month, which is May of every year in Korea.
“The Kakao Harbang program has not only provided a wide variety of activity programs to our children, but has helped our children build a healthy body and sound mind.
Although our activities have been limited this year due to COVID-19, we will play our part to connect the people of our society in the future.
We thank Kakao Harbang for making our wishes come true.”
- Jae-yoon Bu, social worker
Kakao Harbang will continue to grant positive wishes throughout Jeju.
