- Kakao signed a business agreement with Pusan National University and Chonnam National University on Feb 8 to operate the ‘Kakao Tech Campus’ program.

- The program aims to nurture talented students in regions where IT education is relatively underserved.

- The program will run between April and November with a goal to train developers who can be immediately deployed to work.

[February 9, 2023] Kakao is joining hands with local national universities to foster local talent.

Kakao (CEO Hong Euntaek) announced on February 8 that it signed a business agreement with Pusan National University and Chonnam National University, separately, in the Kakao Pangyo Agit on February 8 to operate the Kakao Tech Campus program. The MOU signing ceremony was attended by Ki-Woong Nam, Kakao vice president, Yoon-Ju Baek, Director of the Software Training Center of Pusan National University, Seong-Joon Baek, Dean of the Engineering Department of Chonnam National University, and other distinguished guests.

The Kakao Tech Campus program is a technology developer training program which is operated in collaboration with local universities with an aim to foster developers suitable for the digital environment. Kakao plans to provide differentiated education through cooperation with schools and local communities to create ‘a better world created by technology and people,’ which is Kakao’s ESG direction. Currently, most IT-related education is concentrated in the metropolitan area and specific regions, leading to a relative lack of educational opportunities for students in non-metropolitan areas. Accordingly, Kakao decided to collaborate with regional universities to support the nurturing of talented students in the region. For the first training course in 2023, Busan National University and Chonnam National University, which have excellent educational performance, educational infrastructure, and rich industry-academia cooperation experience, will be selected as the first candidates.

Kakao Tech Campus will be conducted entirely online so that students can participate in the program without time or space limits.  The program provides support from basic developer training to project-based practical training to help the participants grow into junior developers who can be put to work immediately. Kakao’s working-level developers will participate throughout the training to advise students on their learning and project performance, and also provide support for questions and answers related to job search, mentoring, special lectures, and code reviews.

Recruitment for the first Kakao Tech Campus will begin in March, and training will run from April to November. The first web developer training course is divided into the FE (Front-End) track and the BE (Back-End) track, and covers tech stack learning, clone projects, actual web service development projects, etc.

Starting with this MOU, Kakao plans to gradually expand the scope of cooperation and to strive to foster talent with leading universities across the country.

Ki-Woong Nam, Head of Group HR Support Office, said, “Kakao Tech Campus is a new training program to resolve the problems of regional alienation and manpower shortage in the IT industry”, and added, “Kakao will continue to its efforts to create a better world by coexisting with various members of society in the field of education. (End)
