[August 7, 2025] Kakao Pay (CEO Shin Won-keun) introduced core technologies that advance the AI payment experience, showing how users can make payments through natural conversations. Payment Model Context Protocol (MCP) and the Agent Toolkit connect AI agents and payment systems securely and flexibly. They allow developers to build AI based payment services with less friction.

 

Payment MCP enables AI agents to connect safely with Kakao Pay’s payment API. The system handles millions of transactions every day and serves as core infrastructure. This is not a simple API layer. Kakao Pay developed MCP after considering the complex requirements of security and stability that a payment system must meet. MCP is a standard communication protocol between AI models and external tools. It allows AI to use external systems safely and consistently. 

Kakao Pay also developed the Agent Toolkit that supports multiple frameworks. This lets developers implement payment functions through natural conversations with AI chatbots more easily.

 

Each tool within MCP represents a function that AI can call. The Agent Toolkit includes seven core payment APIs, including test, preparation, approval, cancellation, and status check, provided as tools. AI agents can process various payment tasks, such as checking payment status using a transaction ID or generating a payment link with a simple request such as “Create a payment link for a ₩5,000 coffee.” Developers can integrate payment functions without complex steps, while users can experience more natural and simple payments.

 

The technology connects AI agents, MCP, and Kakao Pay Open API into one structure. The stack supports LangChain, Vercel AI SDK and OpenAI SDK and enables developers to use it flexibly across different environments.

 

Kakao Pay also revealed a live demonstration using the Agent Toolkit that showed an AI agent communicating directly with the payment system. When a user said “Create a payment link” or “Cancel the payment,” the AI handled link generation, status checks, and cancellations in real time, proving that AI payment is now a practical reality.

 

Kakao Pay stated, “Payment MCP and the Agent Toolkit are the first step toward the age of AI payments. We will keep advancing innovation with reliability and stability at the core.”
