[June 16, 2026] Kakao (CEO Shina Chung) announced on June 16 the launch of a ChatGPT chatbot that can be used directly within KakaoTalk chatrooms. This chatbot allows users to ask questions to ChatGPT during conversations and receive answers in real time.

 

It is available in both group and one-on-one chats. Users can add the chatbot by tapping the menu in the upper-right corner of a chatroom, selecting “Chatbot,” and then adding ChatGPT. Once added, users can mention ChatGPT by typing “@” in the input field and enter a prompt. The chatbot can also be accessed by tapping the “ChatGPT” button in the keyboard toolbar below the input field.

 

For example, prompts such as “@ChatGPT Tell me today’s weather” or “@ChatGPT Write a birthday message” will generate an immediate response from ChatGPT in the chatroom. Users can continue the conversation by tapping “See More” below a response, which opens the ChatGPT for Kakao service.

 

Prompts can currently be entered as text only, and the chatbot also supports image generation. For example, users can enter “@ChatGPT Draw a seaside landscape” to generate an image based on their request. Kakao has also added suggested commands such as “News,” “Fortune,” and “Popular Questions” above the chat input field for quick access to commonly used features. The chatbot can also mention the user who asked the question when responding, making it easier to identify the intended recipient.

 

Kakao launched ChatGPT for Kakao in October last year through its partnership with OpenAI, providing KakaoTalk users with a simple and convenient way to access AI in their everyday lives. As of May, the service had surpassed 11 million cumulative subscribers. Kakao is also advancing “Kakao Tools,” an AI agent that connects with a range of Kakao and external services, as part of its efforts to expand the AI agent ecosystem.

 

Yongha Yoo, AI Connect Performance Lead at Kakao, stated, “The new chatbot makes it easier and more convenient for users to leverage AI while chatting on KakaoTalk. By bringing KakaoTalk and AI closer together, we will continue to popularize AI as a natural part of everyday life.”

 

In addition, Kakao is rolling out updates to enhance the KakaoTalk experience. The chat input field now appears as a floating element at the bottom of the screen, making conversations easier to follow. Markdown-formatted content, including headings, lists, and text emphasis, can also be viewed with its formatting intact. Kakao has also enhanced “View All Channels,” allowing users to browse coupons from various KakaoTalk Channels in descending order of discount amount. A new “Channel Coupon” card has also been added to KakaoTalk Wallet. The “More” tab now also features game chips, offering popular HTML5 games across a range of genres that users can play without installing a separate app. The new features are available in KakaoTalk version 26.5.0 and later.
