2006-01-24, Daum Communications announced on the 24th that it would launch a cafe for each and every company of the Korean Army, in cooperation with the Army Headquarters.
The campaign set sail in an effort to strengthen friendship among servicemen and to boost morale, in addition to improving the image of the armed forces. The cafe will be particularly useful for young online-savvy officers and soldiers, while contributing to active communications among the servicemen and their family members. Thanks to the cafes, the soldiers will be able to exchange with their family members and friends the information on the daily lives in the barracks, training and holidays.
As part of the first phase of the program, Daum set up and is running cafes for the companies of seven army divisions. Taking into account of the level of information exposure, the members are divided into groups such as officers and soldiers in service, their family members and reservists. The manpower, technology and equipment (server) are supplied by Daum.
Daum also plans to effectively link the 40,000-plus military-related cafes existing under the wings of Daum including the official sites like the Army Homepage. A new category devoted to the army will also be launched within Daum“s cafe network to be connected to the company cafes. Further, the army community portal "Army is my Friend" will set sail in March.
The portal is organized in a way to easily browse the information on the army by offering categories like:
-"Notices and Events" serving as a bulletin board
-"Best Army Cafes" introducing the most active cafes
-"Army Today", a news site
-"Please Vote", an opinion poll site
-"Army Q&A" where questions and answers on the army are collected
Mr. Seok Jong-hoon of Daum Media said: "This campaign is not just aiming to build online cafes. It is significant in that Daum directly runs the portal that represents the Korean Army. We“re glad to be able to contribute to enhancing the image of the army, boosting morale and diffusing a positive picture of the armed forces."
As part of the preparation for opening the army portal, Daum conducted an opinion poll for the servicemen regarding the current status of internet use and the perception on the army cafe. Over 80% of the respondents said that the cafe will make their life in uniform better, while 58% said that they would use it for communicating with their family members and friends.
