[June 13, 2025] Kakao is expanding its infrastructure footprint with a second data center to be established in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do following the launch of its first center in Ansan.
Kakao (CEO Shina Chung) announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on June 13 with Gyeonggi Provincial Office, Namyangju City Hall, and the Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) to build a tentatively named “Digital Hub.” The signing ceremony was held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office and attended by Governor Dong-yeon Kim, Namyangju Mayor Gwang-deok Joo, LH President Han-joon Lee, and Kakao CEO Shina Chung.
Under the MOU, Kakao will invest approximately ₩600 billion to build the Digital Hub on a 92,000-square-meter site located within the Wangsuk Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex. Following administrative procedures such as construction permits, groundbreaking is scheduled for 2026 with completion targeted for 2029.
This initiative is part of Kakao’s long-term strategy to prepare for the age of AI popularization and to ensure the operational stability of its services, which are deeply intertwined with the daily lives of the Korean people. The Digital Hub will serve as a next-generation data center equipped to support high-density AI servers and future technologies. It will also be designed as a green, energy-efficient facility, incorporating renewable energy and maximizing sustainability.
Kakao also plans to leverage the Digital Hub to drive regional economic revitalization and pursue a wide range of cooperative community initiatives. By prioritizing local talent and resources during the construction phase, Kakao aims to contribute directly to the local economy. Furthermore, it will establish a mutual growth fund to support the digital transformation of small businesses, assist with market expansion, and implement local problem-solving programs, building a sustainable model for community-centered development.
Namyangju Mayor Gwang-deok Joo stated, “I am very pleased to welcome Kakao’s large-scale investment, which will be a key step forward in our industrial transformation initiative announced in January. We are committed to ensuring that Kakao’s decision to invest in the Wangsuk district delivers maximum value.”
Kakao CEO Shina Chung replied, “Our mission in this era of AI popularization is to make AI services easy and accessible to everyone in their everyday lives. The Digital Hub will serve as a vital infrastructure to support this mission, and we look forward to working hand-in-hand with Namyangju to enable shared growth and regional development.” (E.O.D.)
